Radial Freeway Strategic Improvement Plan
Overview
Traffic congestion on metro Atlanta highways is a serious threat to the region’s environmental and economic well-being. Fighting congestion is a top priority of Atlanta's transportation officials. In response to this threat, Georgia DOT is systematically evaluating Metro Atlanta's highway system. The Radial Freeway Strategic Improvement Plan (RFSIP) is a key step toward a comprehensive understanding of the transportation system’s current and future needs.

Georgia DOT has a general, on-going planning process in place, including the identification of interstate system needs in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP).
The RFSIP will consider various types of facility improvement projects, including:
- Operational improvements of all types - including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and proximate arterials
- Managed lanes of all types - including traditional toll, Truck-Only, High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV), and High-Occupancy Toll (HOT)
- System preservation and capacity expansion – including maintenance and bridge and interchange reconstructionNon-Auto modes – including bus rapid transit (BRT) and light rail transit (LRT)
Study Area
The study area includes I-75, I-575, SR 400, I-985, I-20, I-85, U.S. 78, and I-675, as well as adjacent routes and interchanges which may be impacted by improvements to these routes.
