Cultural Resources
Georgia DOT is responsible for reviewing GDOT projects and filing appropriate documentation to ensure that all projects comply with applicable federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations.

The Cultural Resources Section's review of GDOT projects is generally conducted under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (if Federally funded or permitted) or the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (if State funded).
View Cultural Resources Responsibilities
- Coordinating and consulting with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), local historic commissions, Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, other federal and state agencies, and other interested parties regarding impacts on historic properties.
- Performing or directing architectural and archaeological field surveys, evaluating the historical and archaeological significance of all properties within a proposed project impact area, and reviewing the project plans to identify and evaluate the project's affect to historically significant properties.
- Seeking alternatives to avoid, minimize or mitigate impacts to historic properties.
- Providing assistance to state and federal agencies (for example, the evaluating the National Register eligibility of the Interstate System within Georgia for the FHWA)
- Maintaining and updating the Georgia Historic Bridge Survey.
